Why Do Cats Need to Knead?

Some cats seem to knead more than others, which raises the question, why do they knead at all? Kneading is an instinctive trait and cats will often knead on other cats, blankets, or someone’s lap. It may seem like a strange behavior, but for cats, it is very normal. When a cat is kneading, it will sometimes purr, or just zone out and enjoy the moment.

Some of the theories for this feline behavior include:

• Kneading to convey being comfortable and to show pleasure.
• Developing a resting place, to create a soft place to sleep.
• Marking territory, as cats are territorial and have scent glands in their paws.
• Leftover from nursing behavior. However, cats seem to knead, regardless of weaning age.

Cats should not be punished for kneading. If it becomes a problem, it is recommended to keep the claws trimmed short. Distraction techniques can also be used to redirect the kneading. If it is a concern, it is recommended to reach out to a veterinarian for advice on how to proceed.
