Anyone who has pets naturally wants only the best for them, including making sure the food is both healthy and safe. Is pet food really safe and nutritious as advertised?
It can get very confusing, because pet foods are not regulated the same way as foods processed for humans, although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states: “The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled.” The FDA does not require pet food products to have pre-market approval, but the FDA says it ensures the ingredients used in pet food are safe.
The Center for Veterinary Medicine makes sure there is a safe animal food (feed) supply to ensure both animals and people are healthy. To do this, they monitor and establish standards for feed contaminants, approve safe food additives, and manage the FDA’s medicated feed and pet food programs. The purpose of the Center for Veterinary Medicine is to provide information regarding federal regulations about animal food.
The only way to be sure the best food possible is being provided to pets, is to do research and talk with a veterinary professional for additional feedback and suggestions. Pets give so much unconditional love, the least that can be done in return is to have a better understanding regarding their food safety.
