The rise in pressure can damage the retina and the optic nerve. Unfortunately, the damage is permanent and irreversible, resulting in total or partial vision loss. Glaucoma eventually leads to blindness in the affected eye if not caught soon enough, but the worst consequence is the constant pain.
Glaucoma is a highly painful condition for pets and can be hard for pet owners and most veterinarians to detect. The first signs are often changes in behavior such as irritability, peeing indoors, loss of appetite, or lethargy.
It is important to determine if it is primary or secondary glaucoma because the treatment needed is different for each type.
