Pets and Seasonal Affective Disorder



Does seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affect our pets?  We know humans are often affected by changes in the seasons. It is unclear as to whether pets suffer from SAD or if they may be reacting to owners’ sadness or lack of energy.

When there is less daylight, the brain produces more melatonin and less serotonin. These changes can cause an adverse effect on mood. It is also possible that the pet is bored. When dogs are used to spending more time outside with people and suddenly do not have that interaction, they may not be getting enough exercise and mental simulation.
