Owning any pet is a major responsibility. There are numerous things to take into consideration when making the decision to adopt. Even more so if it’s your first time owning a certain kind of animal. Below, are some things to know when owning a cat for the first time.
Despite their reputation for being aloof, cats do need attention. They are awake for around 8 hours a day and need stimulation. They need exercise and companionship to be at their healthiest.
Some cats do not get along with children. This is especially something to consider if you have young children.
Cats live longer than dogs. On average, a dog will live 10-13 years, though this does vary by breed. Cats on the other hand, live anywhere from 10-20 years. Some breeds can live even longer. It is important to make certain that your life can fit a pet in for that long.
Cats love to play. Toy mice, string, feathers, and empty boxes make good toys for cats. Be sure to supervise cats when they play with string and feathers as they can easily turn into choking hazards. Put those kinds of toys away when you are not going to be around to watch them. Also, rotating toys with cats is a good idea as they do get bored with them after a while.
Scratching posts are a must. Cats need to scratch to keep their claws shorter and healthy. Give them something they can do that with, or they will scratch whatever they can get their claws on.
Some cats like privacy with their litter boxes, so be sure to get a box with a removable cover. It also helps keep the litter inside the box instead of on the floor around it.
If the cat is a kitten, start a grooming routine early. This way, the cat accustoms to it and is more accepting of the routine later in life.
