Whether a natural disaster such as a flood, snowstorm, a power outage, or a health emergency, it always pays to be prepared. If you are a pet owner, make sure your emergency plans include your pet.
The ASPCA suggests having an emergency preparedness plan and kit. Here is an overview.
Have a designated caregiver for your pet, both temporary and permanent, in case of an emergency. Prepare care instructions in advance.
Create a pet first aid kit. This kit should include items such as an extra harness and leash, carrier blanket, portable food & water dish, disposable litter tray, and garbage bags. Keep your first aid kit in an easy-to-reach place such as near an exit or in your vehicle. Replace out-of-date items in your first aid kit annually.
Make sure to have an evacuation plan and shelter. The evacuation plan should detail how to safely leave your home with your pet for different emergencies. If pets are not allowed in the place you are going, have a backup plan in a safe area for your animal.
Keep your pet up to date on all vaccinations and wellness exams to protect them and others from diseases during an emergency.
Practice your plan by holding fire and emergency drills.
