
Despite the common belief that non-breed dogs are healthier, data from a landmark University of California–Davis study tell a different story.
A key study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (2013) analyzed over 27,000 cases involving 24 inherited disorders in dogs. When matched for age, sex, and body weight, 13 of these disorders, such as hip dysplasia, cancers, and lens luxation, showed no significant difference in prevalence between breeds and their non-breed counterparts. Purebreds were more likely to have 10 specific conditions, including dilated cardiomyopathy, elbow dysplasia, cataracts, and hypothyroidism. Non‑breed dogs only showed higher incidence in one: ruptured cranial cruciate ligament.
In essence, disorders among purebred dogs may be more predictable, but disorders in general are not necessarily more prevalent.
These findings reflect deep-rooted genetic factors. Some hereditary conditions originate from ancient mutations shared across all dogs, while others are more breed-specific due to recent lineage. Breed clubs and organizations like the AKC’s Canine Health Foundation are working to reduce purebred dogs’ risks through targeted research and health screening programs.
Contrary to popular belief, non-breed dogs are not inherently healthier than purebreds. Each dog’s health depends on genetics, breeding history, and proactive care. Whether you choose from a breeder or a shelter, informed, responsible selection and quality veterinary care are what truly promote long-term canine health.
