
We all hear the advice to stay well‐hydrated, and that certainly applies to dogs, too. Always keep clean, fresh water available, especially in warm weather. But can a dog actually drink too much water?
While preventing dehydration is crucial, there is indeed a point at which too much water becomes dangerous. Many pet owners, and even some veterinarians, are unaware that excessive water intake can trigger alarming symptoms and, in extreme cases, be fatal.
What Is Water Intoxication?
Water intoxication (also known as water poisoning, hyperhydration, or water toxemia) occurs when a dog’s body takes in more water than it can manage. The cascade begins when excessive water dilutes sodium levels in the fluid outside the cells, a condition called hyponatremia.
To correct the imbalance, the body draws more fluid into cells. Some organs can adapt to swelling (e.g., liver), but others, especially the brain, confined within the skull, cannot. The result can be swelling, pressure on the brain, and serious damage.
In humans, this often arises from drinking huge volumes of water quickly (for instance, after intense exercise or in water-drinking contests). In dogs, it is commonly linked to swimming, diving, retrieving from water, or even playfully biting streams from hoses or sprinklers. Because their bodies must work harder to expel excess water, toy or small dog breeds are particularly vulnerable compared to larger dogs.

Water intoxication is not deeply covered in veterinary literature and may easily be misdiagnosed as hypothermia, overexertion, or other conditions. One clue is low sodium levels in lab tests, though by the time the dog reaches the clinic, those levels might have partly normalized, even though cellular damage has already occurred.
Which Dogs Are at Greatest Risk?
Dogs that train or play heavily in water are naturally exposed to the danger of ingesting excess water. High-energy or high-drive dogs with low fat reserves and high pain tolerance may inadvertently push past safe limits.
Interestingly, breeds bred for aquatic work sometimes swallow less water while swimming, perhaps because they are bred to move cleanly through the water without causing surface disturbance.
