Thinking about taking your dog for a swim to cool off this summer? Whether you are headed to the beach, the lake, or the backyard pool, a few simple precautions can help keep your pup safe and comfortable in the water.
First, introduce your dog to the water slowly. While many dogs can swim naturally and enjoy it, not every dog is confident in the water right away. Start in a shallow area and never force your pet to go in. You can gently support your dog’s belly with your hand while they get used to the feeling. If your pup seems unsure or is not a strong swimmer, consider using a dog life jacket.
Never leave your dog unattended around water. Even dogs that swim well can become tired, disoriented, or have trouble getting out. Stay close enough to help your pet at all times.
Keep fresh, clean drinking water nearby. This can discourage your dog from drinking pool, lake, or ocean water, which may contain chemicals, salt, bacteria, or other contaminants. When playing fetch in the water, choose flat toys rather than round ones to help reduce the amount of water your dog swallows while retrieving them.
Make time for plenty of breaks. Swimming is excellent exercise, but it can also be tiring. Watch for signs of fatigue, such as heavy panting, slowing down, difficulty staying afloat, or reluctance to continue.
After each swim, rinse your dog with warm, clean water. This helps remove salt, chlorine, dirt, and other irritants that can cause itching or affect the health of your dog’s coat and skin.
A cool swim can be a great way for you and your pup to enjoy a hot summer day. With a little preparation and close supervision, you can help make every swim safe, refreshing, and fun.
