Summer Tips for Canines

Summer is almost here, and it is important to keep the safety of our beloved dogs in mind. There are a number of things we can do for their safety.  Following is a short list of some of the most important:

• Visit with the vet for a spring or early summer checkup, as your annual wellness visit.
• Talk with your veterinarian about flea & tick prevention and about heartworms.
• Never leave your dog unattended in direct sunlight or when the temperature may go above 70⁰ F.  Heatstroke can happen quickly.
• Always make sure your dog has access to fresh water.
• Dogs can get sunburned. Limit exposure. Learn about pet-safe sunblock if needed.
• Know the symptoms of overheating in pets.
• Test the asphalt before taking dogs on walks. Paw pads can get burned.

These are only some things to consider when your dogs go outside. Always keep your veterinarian’s information handy in case of an emergency.
