The holiday season is here, and with it comes decorations, gatherings, and plenty of excitement. While you’re preparing your home for the festivities, remember that many traditional holiday items can pose hazards to your furry friends. Here are some tips to help keep your pets safe and happy this season.
Keep Christmas Trees Pet-Safe
If you’re putting up a tree, place it in a corner of the room. This helps prevent your pet from knocking it over and makes it less tempting to play with. For live trees, regularly sweep up fallen pine needles, they can cause serious intestinal damage if swallowed. Also, monitor the tree’s water reservoir; it may contain fertilizers or preservatives that are toxic to animals.
Watch Decorations and Plants
Keep ornaments and tinsel high enough so pets can’t reach them. Tinsel, in particular, can cause dangerous intestinal blockages if ingested.
Many popular holiday plants, including poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe, are toxic to cats and dogs. Use artificial versions or ensure live plants are well out of reach.

Always place candles on high shelves where pets can’t knock them over. For fireplaces, use sturdy screens to prevent curious paws from getting too close.

Keep an eye on pets while wrapping gifts. Wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows can cause digestive issues if eaten.
During gatherings, provide your pet with a quiet, comfortable space to retreat to a separate room or a cozy spot under furniture can work well.
Avoid Dangerous Treats
Be mindful of what your pets eat during the holidays. Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats, and some sweets or baked goods contain xylitol, which can be deadly even in small amounts. Stick to pet-safe treats instead.
